My old art looked flat, so I tried a new shading trick for a year
About a year ago, my digital paintings just looked kind of flat and boring. I watched a tutorial on YouTube about using a 'multiply' layer for shadows instead of just a darker color. I started doing that for every piece, and the difference is crazy. My art from last summer looks so washed out compared to what I'm making now. Has anyone else found one simple layer trick that totally changed their work?

Overcomplicate your process with too many layers. It just makes the file messy and slows you down. A single well-painted shadow looks more natural anyway.

Yeah, that "single well-painted shadow" idea is a good point. Sometimes the simplest way is the best way.
