Lost my entire WIP file 3 days before a gallery submission deadline

Last Tuesday night I was putting final touches on a digital portrait for a local gallery call in Portland. My software crashed and when I reopened it, the file was corrupted and wouldn't load. I spent Wednesday and Thursday rebuilding the piece from scratch using just the low-res reference screenshots I had saved. Now I'm wondering how you all handle backing up work mid-process without breaking your flow?

...and it's kinda funny how losing one file taught me more about building backup habits than years of good intentions ever did.
