Hot take: that $50 digital art course on Udemy was a total rip off

I bought a course called "Pro Digital Painting Secrets" about 8 months ago for $49.99. It was just the instructor speedpainting over his own sketches with no real explanation. I wasted 6 hours watching someone draw without actually teaching anything. Did anyone else get burned by a hyped-up art tutorial that was all flash?

I watched that same course and honestly I LEARNED more from his mistakes than any step-by-step tutorial.

Actually I was the exact opposite of you at first, I thought those speedpaint videos were a waste of time because they didn't spell everything out. But then I watched one where the artist kept making obvious errors and fixing them, and something just clicked. It was like watching someone cook without a recipe, you see how they think on the fly and handle mistakes. Now I actually prefer those raw unedited sessions to the polished step by step tutorials because you get real problem solving instead of just a perfect finished product. Those "mistakes" show you what not to do way better than someone telling you what to do.
