Before and after on the same character, 8 months apart

I tried drawing the same OC again after not touching her for 8 months and the difference is wild. The old version had flat lighting and no contrast, the new one has actual shadows and a warm highlight. What changed was I started studying how light bounces off different surfaces instead of just guessing. Did anyone else see a big jump after focusing on one specific skill like lighting or anatomy?

Oh man, that lighting study really IS the game changer. I did the same thing and it felt like my art went from flat to having actual DEPTH overnight.
