Appreciation post: My friend's 3D scene looked flat until he changed the lighting

He made a cool sci-fi hallway in Blender but the first render felt like a cardboard box. After I suggested trying a volumetric light from a ceiling panel, the whole thing got depth and mood in about 20 minutes. Do you think lighting is the most underrated part of making a digital piece feel real?

My buddy's forest scene went from flat to spooky just by adding fog.

Watched a friend do the same thing with a photo of a boring backyard shed. A little mist in Photoshop and suddenly it looked like a place where a ghost would definitely keep its gardening tools. My own attempts usually just make things look blurry and sad, like the camera has a cold. Fog is basically the magic "nope" filter for any scene.

Hold on, you said a ghost's gardening tools. That's the part that got me. I just keep picturing a spectral trowel and some see-through seed packets. It's such a specific image. Your friend didn't just make a spooky shed, they gave that ghost a whole hobby. My blurry mess just looks like a sad, damp shed. Theirs has a storyline.
