Told my kids a joke about a fence for 3 years before my wife groaned and said it makes no sense

I used to say "Why did the fence cross the road?" and pause for effect, thinking it was a classic build up. My wife finally told me last Tuesday that fences don't cross roads, they run along them, and the punchline about "nailed it" just falls flat without a proper setup. How do you guys check if a joke actually works before you spend years telling it?

Wait, you seriously told that joke for THREE YEARS without anyone correcting you? I'm honestly impressed your family has that much patience. That's wild to me. Usually when a joke bombs once most people figure it out, but you just kept going for over a thousand days. You must have told that thing like what, 20 or 30 times at least? And nobody even cracked a smile to tip you off? That's next level commitment to a terrible premise, man. I'm kinda in awe right now honestly.

Ngl, "next level commitment" is a bit dramatic for a dad joke, it's not that serious.
