Hit 500 dad jokes posted, my wife finally laughed at number 498
I passed 500 posts on this community earlier this week and the count felt like a line in the sand between casual posting and full blown obsession. My chiropractor, of all people, told me joke 490 about a spine that couldn't align because it was feeling crooked, and I realized he must have read it from my posts. That moment of having my own joke told back to me, slightly wrong but still recognizable, was both embarrassing and amazing. The 500 mark has made me wonder if I should start crediting myself when people repeat my jokes or just let them have it. Does anyone else get weirdly possessive when someone misattributes their joke, or do you just feel proud that it got out there at all?
Back in 2019 I had a buddy Dave repeat my bit about the guy who invented the shovel and it got labeled the greatest tool ever, and he told it at a party like it was his own. I sat there for a second feeling annoyed, then just let it go, because honestly the joke being alive in the room mattered more than whose name was on it. What worked for me was keeping a note on my phone with the date and wording of stuff I post, so when it comes back around I know for sure it started with me. That little log took the sting out of the misattribution, weirdly. The chiropractor thing is a win, dude, someone read your stuff close enough to carry it into a real conversation. Let them have it and just enjoy that it traveled.
