Used to think password managers were too risky until I had my banking app drained in 2022

After someone got into my Chase account through a reused password I finally caved and tried Bitwarden and now I don't even have to remember anything besides one master password, has anyone else made the switch after getting burned?

Whoa hold on, I gotta push back a little here! I get that password managers work for a lot of people and I'm glad you found something that helps. But calling it "basic digital hygiene" feels like a stretch to me. I've seen too many stories about the master password getting phished or some exploit in the browser extension. That's putting a whole lot of trust in one basket. I'd rather just use a notebook by my desk and keep it locked in a drawer. It's not as convenient but I know exactly where my passwords are and nobody's getting them through a data breach. I think the fear around managers isn't totally crazy when you look at how often even big companies mess up security.

Yeah it's wild how we all think it won't happen to us until it does, isn't it? I had the same wake up call when someone got into my Amazon account and ordered like four fire sticks to an address in Texas. That's actually how I think about it now - you don't wait for your pipes to burst before you get renter's insurance, you know? The messaging around password managers has been so weirdly fear-based for years (like who actually believes one company is gonna hold all your keys and then get hacked) but it's just basic digital hygiene at this point.
