TIL that backing up to the cloud isn't enough after a ransomware scare at work yesterday.

Our office got hit by malware that encrypted the cloud backup too because it was synced live. Has anyone else learned the hard way that you need an offline backup too?

Did you catch that article from a few weeks back about the 3-2-1 backup rule? It basically says keep three copies of your data, on two different types of media, with one offsite. That offline piece is key because if it's not connected to your network, ransomware can't touch it. I started keeping a hard drive in a fire safe after a friend lost years of photos to a similar synced backup mess.

3 copies seems like overkill unless you're running a business or something. Most people don't have that kind of storage or time to manage it. One solid backup in the cloud and a manual copy to an external drive every few months is plenty.
