The week my router firmware update locked me out of my own network for 3 days
Last Tuesday I finally got around to updating the firmware on my home router, something I had put off for almost 2 years because the old version worked fine. The update finished, the router rebooted, and suddenly nothing could connect, not my laptop, not my phone, not even the smart TV in the bedroom. I spent 45 minutes on the phone with support before I admitted I had never actually saved my admin password anywhere, and the default one on the sticker had worn off. I ended up factory resetting the whole thing and rebuilding every setting from scratch, which honestly made me realize how many devices I had just let sit on the guest network. Has anyone else set up a backup of their router config somewhere safe, and if so what do you actually use?
Honestly I used to think saving a router config was overkill and just something IT guys did for fun. Then my brother lost his whole setup after a power surge and spent a weekend redoing every device and rule by hand. Now I keep a backup file on a USB stick in my desk drawer, plus a photo of the admin login taped inside the cabinet door. It is not fancy and it takes two minutes, but it saved me the last time I bricked a setting on accident. The password thing is the real lesson here, because a config file you can't get into is useless.
