Rant: My coworker said password managers are a single point of failure

Heard this take from Dave in accounting yesterday. He thinks storing all your passwords in one app is just asking for trouble if they get hacked. But I argued that reusing weak passwords across 50 sites is way worse. Which side do you fall on here? Has anyone actually had a password manager get breached on them?

Dave's not wrong that it's a target, but everything's a target these days. The real question is whether Dave reuses the same password for his bank and his fishing forum, because that's the actual disaster scenario. Yeah, password managers have been breached before, but the good ones encrypt everything so even when they get hit, the data's useless. Meanwhile Dave's out here writing his passwords on sticky notes under his keyboard, which is a way dumber single point of failure if you ask me. It's like worrying about getting struck by lightning while you're already standing in a flood.

Ha! Yeah @noahs82, the sticky note under the keyboard is basically Dave handing the keys to his house to the guy who mows the lawn. But let's be real, Dave's also the guy who uses "password123" for his work VPN because he's got like 47 logins and just gave up. I'm not saying password managers are perfect, but at least when LastPass gets hacked the data looks like a toddler scribbled on it. Dave's plaintext sticky notes are just one office cleaning night away from being posted on the internet for all of us to laugh at.
