Put a sticky note over my webcam for 2 weeks and now I feel like a weirdo checking it
So about 3 weeks ago I read one of those tips about covering your webcam and figured sure, free security, why not. I cut a little square of a Post-it, stuck it right over the lens on my laptop, done. Well last Tuesday my sister wanted to video call to see my new apartment in Tucson and I spent a solid 4 minutes talking to her with the note still on, wondering why she kept saying my camera looked 'broken.' She finally texted me a screenshot of my own black screen and I felt like such a dope. Here's the thing though, when I peeled it off the sticky stuff left this gross residue ring on the lens and I had to wipe it with my glasses cloth like 6 times. It did get me thinking about how many other little 'security steps' I do half asleep and never actually check, like my router password which I'm pretty sure is still the one on the sticker. Anyway does anyone use one of those little sliding covers instead of tape or paper? I want something I can actually open without feeling like I'm defusing a bomb.

I used to roll my eyes at people who covered their cams, figured it was just paranoia for folks watching too many spy movies. Then my buddy who does IT for a hospital showed me how easy it is for malware to flip the light off and run the cam anyway, and I switched sides real quick. The sliding covers are worth the 8 bucks, mine clicks open with a thumb and no gunk on the glass. Your post-it residue problem is exactly why I gave up on tape and paper after like a week. Weird part is I still forget to close it half the time, so now the joke is I paid money to be lazy more neatly.
