My kid clicked a link in a game chat and our router started acting weird

We were in the living room and my son was playing an online game on his tablet. He clicked a link someone sent him in the chat, and about ten minutes later, our internet got super slow and the router lights were blinking in a strange pattern. I had to unplug the router, reset it to factory settings, and change all our Wi-Fi passwords. Has anyone else had to deal with a router getting messed up from a simple click?

My buddy's router got bricked from a sketchy game link last year.

Remember my cousin downloading a "free" movie that turned his whole home network into a botnet for a week. His smart fridge started sending spam emails, and the doorbell cam just showed static. Took a factory reset on every single device to stop the weird traffic.

Ask @mason283 if his buddy ever found out what kind of malware that was. Your cousin's story is nightmare fuel. The fridge sending spam is just wild. Did they figure out which movie triggered it? These torrent sites are getting way too sophisticated with their payloads.
