My 12-year-old nephew asked me why I don't have a password on my tablet at home.
We were at my place last weekend and he grabbed my tablet off the coffee table to look something up. He looked confused and said, 'Aunt Maggie, it just opened. Don't you have a code?' I told him it's just me here, so why bother. He shrugged and said, 'But what if someone breaks in? They could get into your bank app.' It hit different coming from a kid. I set up a PIN that night. Has anyone else had a simple comment make them tighten up their home security?

Kids have this way of pointing out the simple gaps in our adult logic. It's like they see the world without all the habits we build up. My friend's daughter once asked why we leave the spare key under the flower pot if it's a secret from bad guys. Another time, a neighbor's kid saw me type my PIN at the store and just said it out loud, which was a huge wake-up call. They notice the basic stuff because they're still learning the rules, and sometimes the rules we follow don't even make sense.

My cousin's kid said the same thing about my front door lock last year. Kids notice the obvious stuff we overlook.

That bit about the kid saying the PIN out loud at the store really got me... that's such a perfect example. Kids just don't have that filter yet, they say exactly what they see. And the spare key under the flower pot thing is hilarious but also kind of scary when you think about it. We get so used to our little routines we forget how obvious they are to someone looking in from the outside. It's like we're all walking around with blind spots and kids are just walking around with flashlights.
