Got my email hacked after using the airport WiFi last summer

I was stuck at O'Hare for 4 hours during a layover last July. I used the free WiFi to check my work email real quick. A week later someone logged into my account from a different country and sent out spam messages to my whole address book. Now I never connect to public networks without my VPN turned on first. Does anyone have a good VPN service they trust for travel?

ProtonVPN's free tier saved me in a Tokyo train station last spring when I had to check my banking app. Mullvad is another solid one that doesn't ask for an email to sign up, so you're fully anonymous.
