Grill grate rusted through during a family cookout last weekend

I was flipping burgers at my sister's place in Akron. Sparks flew up when I put the spatula down. Turns out a quarter of the grate had rusted away underneath the new paint job. I grabbed a cast iron pan off the stove and finished cooking on that instead. Has anyone else had a hidden rust issue ruin their dinner plans?

I mean yeah that sucks but come on, it's a grill grate not a life or death situation. You had a backup pan right there so dinner wasn't even ruined, you just got some sparks going for a second.

Ngl a quarter of the grate just gone under fresh paint? That's wild. Honestly I'd be shook too if sparks started flying off my spatula mid-cookout.
