Found a goldmine of old PC cases at a recycling center last weekend

I stopped by the local e-waste recycling center last Saturday just to drop off an old monitor, but I ended up spending like 2 hours digging through their scrap pile. You wouldn't believe the stuff people throw away. I spotted a vintage beige Dell Optiplex from the early 2000s, a Compaq Presario with that classic CD tray mechanism, and even a dusty old IBM tower with the genuine retro yellowing. The workers there said they usually strip these for metals, so I asked if I could take a couple and they just waved me on. I grabbed the Optiplex and the IBM case for free, cleaned them up with some compressed air and a damp cloth, and now I'm planning to transplant my Ryzen 5 build into one of them. The trick is checking the back I/O panel and drive bays before you commit, because some of these old cases need a lot of modding to fit modern parts. Has anyone else scored cases from a dump or recycling center? What did you find?

found a goldmine" - just watch out for asbestos in the old case insulation.

Yeah you're not kidding about the asbestos. I've opened up a few old panels from the 50s and that fuzzy white insulation around the internal wires is nasty stuff. Definitely wear a respirator and wet it down before you touch it with @henry_kelly54. Also watch out for the old paper capacitors that leak black goo all over the place, that's a mess to clean up.

Yeah i've noticed that with a lot of old stuff from that era, not just electronics but like houses and cars from the 50s. The whole attitude back then was use the most dangerous material available because it worked good and nobody told them it was toxic. My dad had an old camper from the 60s and the entire thing was built with asbestos panels, like they used it for everything including the stove insulation. @henry_kelly54 might want to check what else is in that "goldmine" because those old appliances often have it packed into the heat shields too. The paper cap goo is annoying but at least it won't kill you slowly, just makes a huge sticky mess everywhere. Its wild how we look back now and wonder what they were thinking with all that stuff.
