A dusty OptiPlex at a flea market changed my whole build plan
I was at the flea market off Route 40 in Wheeling last Saturday and saw this beat-up Dell OptiPlex from 2008 sitting under a table for $15. The guy said it didn't turn on, but I popped the side panel and realized the top cover had enough room for a full ATX PSU and a 240mm radiator if I cut the drive cage. I ended up buying it, gutting the old motherboard, and now I'm wondering if anyone else has converted a small form factor office PC into a sleeper by dropping in a mid-range GPU with a riser cable, or is that asking for thermal trouble?

That dusty OptiPlex for $15 is such a steal, honestly. I've done the riser cable thing twice now and it works way better than people expect, just make sure you zip tie the GPU solid so it doesn't sag over time. Thermal trouble is real but not a dealbreaker, I flipped the PSU to pull air out the top and added a cheap 92mm fan on the back. The drive cage cut is the smart move, that's where all the hidden space lives. Even a mid-range card will run fine if you keep the case open to the side or cut a vent panel. Sleeper builds are the best, nobody expects that old office box to run games.
