A 4-hour USB header swap on a 2003 Dell case
I was building a sleeper in an old Dell Dimension 2400 and the front USB header had a different pin layout than my new motherboard. Ended up cutting and splicing wires one by one because the pinout diagram online was wrong for this specific revision. Has anyone else run into old case headers that just refuse to play nice with modern boards?

Multimeter saved my ass on an old HP case, pins were labeled wrong too.

Read somewhere that HP used different pinout standards across different years of the same model, which is just insane. A multimeter is the only way to be sure you're not frying something important. Good call checking before plugging it in blindly.
