Learn to love the port stops you've never heard of, not the ones the brochures push
Booked a 7 day western Caribbean run out of Miami back in March and the two stops I almost skipped turned out to be the whole trip. Cozumel and Grand Cayman were fine but packed, four ships in port at once, everything marked up. Then we hit Costa Maya and Belize City. In Costa Maya there's a little fishing village a short cab ride from the pier, Mahahual, where a plate of fresh ceviche and a beer ran me $9. In Belize we took a small water taxi to Caye Caulker instead of the cruise line excursion and snorkeled for $35 with a local kid who knew where the nurse sharks hang out. The folks who booked the ship's 'official' version paid four times that for basically the same water. Here's the thing I noticed. People treat the port list like a checklist of famous names. Big brand stops mean big crowds and big prices. The quiet stops are where you actually meet people and eat real food. Anyone else plan their whole cruise around the small ports and just treat the big ones like a rest day?
