Can we talk about the "formal night" pressure being overrated?

Everyone acts like packing a tux or gown is mandatory, but my wife and I skipped it on our 7 night Caribbean cruise last year and hit the buffet in shorts. The main dining room let us in anyway with a polo and khakis, no drama. Half the folks in suites were just as casual by deck 5. Honestly, the only people who care are the ones taking photos for social media. Am I missing something, or is formal night just a marketing thing to sell drink packages?

I used to be the guy who packed the suit and everything. First cruise I ever took I brought a tux because I thought they would turn me away at the door. Then I watched a guy in a Hawaiian shirt walk right into the dining room on formal night and nobody said a word to him. After that I stopped dragging the extra bag.
