Unpopular opinion: writing prompts with strict rules kill better stories than ones that let you go anywhere
Last week I joined a 24 hour short story contest in Portland and the prompt was just three words: 'broken compass, Tuesday.' I froze for two hours because there were no rules about genre, length, or point of view. My friend got a prompt with six rules attached (must be under 500 words, must include a phone call, must end on a question) and she finished in 90 minutes with something way better than mine. I keep going back and forth on whether rules box you in or actually push you somewhere interesting. So which side are you on, do tight prompts help you write or do they just make every story feel the same?
