One critique about my dialogue tags changed how I write every scene
Last month I posted a scene in a feedback thread and someone said every line was 'she whispered' or 'he snapped' and it read like a stage direction list. At first I got defensive, but then I counted and I had 14 tags on a single page. That felt dumb. So I cut almost all of them and let the action show who was talking, like having a character pour coffee mid argument instead of saying 'she said angrily.' Now my drafts feel faster and readers actually tell me the conversations flow better. Has anyone else had a beta reader point out a habit you were blind to, and did fixing it mess with your voice at first or make it stronger?
