My three-act structure fell apart halfway through chapter 5
I was writing a horror story set in an abandoned school in Detroit, had the whole outline planned. Then my protagonist did something I didn't expect and the plot just stopped making sense. I spent two days trying to force it back on track before I gave up and started a new outline from scratch. Has anyone ever had a character completely derail your story like that?

Honestly I gotta push back on this a little. Your character didn't derail your story. They showed you what was actually meant to happen. That moment where you feel like the plot stops making sense is usually the story trying to tell you something about your character or your setting that you didn't plan for. Instead of fighting it I think you should lean into it and see where they want to take you. The best stuff I've ever written came from those moments where I had to throw the outline away and just follow the character for a while. Your job isn't to control them it's to discover who they really are.

Wait, isn't that exactly what makes writing feel alive though? Like when your character decides they'd rather hide in the back of a tavern than ride off to battle, and suddenly you realize they're scared of horses because of something that happened to them as a kid. That one moment changes everything about who they are and why they do things. You start asking yourself all these questions you never thought to ask before. It turns your simple revenge story into something about learning to trust again or facing old fears. That's the stuff readers actually remember, not the outline you made three weeks ago.
