My best friend said my fantasy world felt too safe and it threw me for a loop

She pointed out that every problem I gave my characters had a clear solution and no real stakes. It got me thinking about how I've been avoiding messing up my own world out of fear, and now I'm wondering if anyone else has had their writing critiqued in a way that changed how they build things.

Did it make you want to go back and rework everything? Something similar happened with my mystery novel. My beta reader said my villain's plan was too neat and tidy, like I just wanted the good guys to win. It stung at first but she was right. I ended up tearing out a whole chapter where a clue basically fell into their laps and made the detective actually mess up and lose someone. The story is way better for it now.

Honestly, man, I think people overthink this stuff sometimes. It's a mystery novel not a court case. Who cares if the villain's plan is a little neat? It's fiction, it's supposed to be satisfying.
