My 12-year-old laptop finally gave up the ghost last Tuesday, taking a folder of half-finished story ideas with it.
I was trying to flesh out a prompt about a character who finds a key that opens any door, but the old machine just shut down and wouldn't boot past a blank screen, so now I'm trying to remember those fragments and rebuild them from scribbled notes in a coffee-stained notebook.

Sounds like you dodged a bullet. A key that opens any door is a plot that writes itself, and those half-finished ideas were probably holding you back anyway. That coffee-stained notebook is the real find, trust me. All my best thoughts start on a napkin or a gas receipt.

Oh man, that's the worst feeling! I lost a whole vacation photo album once when an external hard drive just died. The weird thing is, trying to remember the pictures made me realize which ones actually mattered. Maybe your notebook fragments are like that, the good bones of the idea that stuck with you for a reason.
