My 11 year old asked why my prompts always start with a dead body, and I couldn't answer her
She was reading over my shoulder on the couch in Bend last week and just said it flat out, "Dad, do all your stories have to start with somebody dead?" I went back through my prompt notebook and counted 14 openings in a row, and 9 of them were a corpse, a funeral, or a body in water. The worst part is she's right, and I didn't even notice it happening. I told her the dead body is easy because it hands you a question for free, and she said that sounds like cheating. So I've been trying to start prompts with a smell, or a wrong word somebody says, or a door that's already open. What's the one opening move you keep falling back on without meaning to?
