Just realized my best character ideas come from eavesdropping at the diner counter
I was sitting at Mel's Diner last Tuesday grabbing a late breakfast and this old guy two stools down was telling his buddy about how his neighbor's dog kept digging under the fence. The way he described it, like it was a personal betrayal, gave me a whole character concept for this noir story I'm working on. I always thought I had to sit in a quiet room to brainstorm, but overhearing real conversations with their weird pauses and grudges feels way more genuine. Has anyone else found a weird spot that gives you better prompts than just staring at a blank page?

Honestly the diner is gold for that, I got a whole short story from a waitress complaining about a customer's coffee order.

It's funny how the best stories are hiding in plain sight, waiting for someone to just shut up and listen.
