Found out that most writing contests charge entry fees that go straight to the judges' pockets

I was looking up submission guidelines for a short story contest last week and stumbled on a stat that floored me. Apparently around 70% of small literary contests pocket the entry fees without ever giving out a prize to anyone. I dug into it on a forum for writers and found stories of people paying $25 a pop for years with no win. Has anyone else looked into where their contest money actually goes?

Yeah but that's the scam though, they bank on people wanting to be published so bad they ignore the red flags.

Guess my $200 in entry fees just bought some judge a nice dinner.
