That time I figured out a better way to level a crawler crane on soft ground

I was setting up on a job near a riverbank in Nashville last spring and the ground was just mush. Normally I'd spend forever with cribbing and mats trying to get the tracks level. Then an old timer I was working with showed me to use the crane's own hydraulics to lift one track slightly, then slide a single 4x8 sheet of 3/4 plywood under the low side. Saved me near 45 minutes of messing around. Has anyone else tried that trick or got a different method for soft sites?

My dumb ass spent years fighting with cribbing before someone finally showed me this. Now I feel like I owe that old timer a case of beer for every time it's saved me from digging myself a hole.

My buddy Dave spent three hours trying to level a trailer with shims before a retired framer walked over and showed him the same trick in five minutes. He still buys that guy a beer every time he's in town.
