Showerthought: the best day I ever had on a crane vs the absolute worst

I had a day last spring where I placed 12 precast panels in 6 hours with zero re-picks and the spotter bought everyone lunch. Then last month I had a day where a load shifted in the wind and I bent a bridle, cost the company $900 in damage and a full afternoon of downtime. Do you guys think these wild swings are just luck or is there something you do to keep things steady?

Nah, I don't buy the luck angle. Most of it's just prep and knowing when to say no to a sketchy setup.

sean_foster52's got it right about the prep and knowing when to walk away... that's the part people miss. It's not really luck, it's just paying attention to the small stuff that adds up. I notice this pattern everywhere, not just on the job. Like with cooking, if you skip washing the pans properly it messes up the whole meal, same with driving in bad weather if you don't check your tires. The good days and bad days look like luck on the surface, but really it's just whether you put in the boring work beforehand or not. Once you see that pattern it makes the rough days a little easier to handle because you know what went wrong.
