PSA: I was riding the dead band on my swing for 8 years and a 47 year old guy on the load chart straightened me out
For years I thought a little drift in the swing was just how the machine felt, so I'd tap the lever and let it coast, and I figured that was normal. Then last month at a job in Beaumont a guy I was spotting for asked why I kept bumping the brake instead of feathering the lever, and he pulled out his load chart and showed me how much my little taps were adding to the pendulum. Turns out I was fighting the swing every time, and once I started easing the lever instead of jabbing it, the load quit swaying on the stop. So here's the argument: is loose lever work something you should let a green operator figure out on their own, or should a hand correct it the first week before it turns into a habit? I lean toward speaking up, but I want to hear from folks who think you learn it by feel and nobody should coach it out of you.
