On the east side bridge project, I skip the usual rigging method.

All the other operators here swear by double-wire hooks for precision lifts. I find a single hook with a tagline gives me more control in tight spaces. We had a close call when a double hook snagged on scaffolding yesterday. My way might not be popular, but it feels safer for this job.

No doubt, double hooks give you a backup if one line fails. A tagline can slip, but a second wire keeps the load steady. That extra safety can prevent a major accident.

My one-hook method is basically a trust fall with steel.

Double-wire hooks have always given me better balance on lifts, especially with uneven loads. In tight spaces, the second wire can keep the load from spinning if you lose tension on the tagline. I've seen single hooks lead to more sway when positioning heavy beams. For precision work, that extra point of contact makes a big difference.
