My 58 year old spotter in Baltimore swears by hand signals over radios and I can't decide if he's right
Last Tuesday I was doing a pick on a tight job in Baltimore and my spotter Ray, who has been doing this 31 years, refused to use the radio. He stood out there in the rain doing hand signals the whole time and every single pick landed dead center. Afterward he told me radios make guys lazy because you stop watching the load and just listen to a voice. I get where he's coming from, because I've had radios cut out mid pick and it scared the daylights out of me. But at the same time, I've worked with guys where all we had was a radio and it went fine, plus in fog or around a blind corner you can't see hands at all. Ray's argument is that if you can't see your spotter you shouldn't be swinging, period, and honestly that one stuck with me. So now I'm stuck in the middle. Do you all trust radios on a blind pick or do you shut it down and wait for eyes on?
