Finally cleared a tricky city pick in downtown Austin this morning
Had a job yesterday moving HVAC units off a roof on a tight street in downtown Austin. The spot was so narrow I had to crab walk the crane just to get the boom over the building. Took me 3 tries to get my outriggers set right because of a buried water line we almost hit. My spotter Dave kept his cool the whole time and talked me through the blind spots. Felt good to get it done without blocking traffic for more than 20 minutes. Anyone else deal with tight urban jobs where the street barely fits the crane?
Hold up. I get you're proud of the job but 20 minutes of blocked traffic in downtown Austin is lucky, not good. I live here and those drivers are already on edge. Picking a spot that requires crab walking and three outrigger resets sounds like the planning was rushed. Your crew should have had that water line marked before you even left the yard. A little more prep could have kept traffic moving and maybe saved an emergency call to 811. Glad your spotter was sharp though, that's the only thing that saved your ass.
Read something last week about downtown sites where old utilities are marked wrong. That's probably what happened here, not rushed planning. Sometimes the paperwork lies and you still gotta make it work.
