Can we talk about the 10,000 hour rule for crane operation?

I just logged my 5,000th hour on a tower crane in Chicago, and honestly, I think the idea you need 10,000 hours to be truly skilled is a myth that sets unrealistic expectations for new operators.

My 3,000th hour was mostly just me figuring out the coffee holder.

Sounds about right, @ryan_hayes2. Some of those logged hours are just learning where the cup holder is.

Honestly the whole hour counting thing misses the point. My buddy logged 8,000 hours on a crawler crane but still can't back a trailer to save his life. Skill is weird like that, it doesn't always transfer. He could thread a hook through a window blindfolded but put him in a parking lot and it's pure chaos. Makes you wonder what we're really measuring with all those logged hours anyway.
