Appreciation post: a rigging crew in Gary showed me how to read wind before the alarm sounds
I was on a 90 ton job in Gary, Indiana doing pick and carry work near a warehouse, and the wind kept shifting off the lake all morning. The guy running the tag line, Ray, kept looking up at the tree tops and the flags on the far fence instead of watching the anemometer in the cab. He said the alarm only tells you when it is already a problem, the trees tell you it is coming. We stopped the pick 12 minutes before the alarm went off and the gust that came through would have caught us mid swing. Now I do the same thing every shift, and I catch myself wondering how many close calls happened because nobody looked up.
