A retired operator in Duluth once told me the best crane is the one you know how to fix with a hammer and a crescent wrench.

He said that while we were both waiting for parts in the same muddy yard back in '08, and I still think about it whenever a new rig throws a code for something simple.

Modern rigs have too many sensors that fail over time. Sometimes the old way is just more reliable.
