A morning gust reminded me why wind checks are NON-NEGOTIABLE

I was lifting a section of roof truss when the wind picked up out of nowhere. The load swung hard and I realized I skipped my usual dawn wind check. My hands were shaking but I managed to ease it down without hitting anything. That could have been a HUGE mess if I panicked. Now I set a phone alarm to check the weather app twice before my first lift. Feeling pretty relieved nothing got damaged today.

Relying solely on weather apps can give a false sense of safety. Real wind on site often behaves differently than a forecast, so you still need a physical check of the actual conditions. Good instincts in the moment saved you more than any alarm would have.

Notice how this happens with stuff like GPS too, where the app says turn but the road is actually blocked. What @ellis.charles said about wind checks really shows a bigger thing, where we rely on digital info over our own senses. Honestly, I see it all the time, like when a fitness tracker says I slept great but I feel exhausted. Tbh, it makes me question any app that tries to summarize real life into simple numbers. Ngl, learning to look up from the screen and judge conditions yourself is just smart.

Last Tuesday our app said 5 mph but flags were snapping straight out. Totally get what @ellis.charles means about the real feel being different, my crew now does a visual check before any big lifts.
