TIL you gotta turn off aim assist in split screen or your friend's screen fights yours
Last weekend my buddy and I were playing It Takes Two on his Xbox in split screen and he kept yelling that his character was drifting into walls. I told him he was just bad at the game for about 20 minutes until I actually watched his half of the screen. Turns out aim assist was pulling both our cameras toward different enemies at the same time and making the whole thing feel drunk. He turned it off in the settings menu and we beat the next 3 bosses without a single stupid death. I felt like a jerk for blaming him, honestly. If you play any split screen shooter or action game, try turning aim assist off and see if the controls stop fighting each other. Has anyone else run into this on a specific game?
The part people miss is that aim assist in split screen is often not two separate systems at all. Most engines run one camera or target logic pass for the whole game, so both players end up pulling from the same enemy list at the same time. That is why the drift feels random and awful instead of just weak, because the game is basically arguing with itself 60 times a second. I saw this bad in Halo 3 couch co-op back on the 360, and Gears of War had a version of it too where the snap would yank your view toward whatever your partner was already shooting. Turning it off fixes the fight, but it also means your aim is fully on you, so there is a trade. The weird fix some games use is locking aim assist to player one only, which is worse because now player two is just playing a harder game.
