Half my shop wants strict fees, the other half says it scares people off. How do you balance this?

Sounds like you're trying to find that magical goldilocks zone where you don't look like a pushover but also don't come off as a total monster. Good luck with that committee meeting! Maybe just flip a coin and prepare for half the team to grumble no matter what you pick.

My last committee meeting had seven people and we spent twenty minutes debating the font size on a memo. I've found the real monster is the person who suggests "one more round of small edits" at 4:55 PM. At this point, bringing a coin might actually get us to a decision faster.

That Goldilocks zone is a real thing on committees. Honestly, the mess comes from trying to please five different opinions at once. Keith's coin flip idea might honestly be the most fair way.
