The client who asked for 'natural but Instagram' taught me to clarify better

Had a woman last month point to a photo of a bright ginger Balayage and say she wanted something natural. After 20 minutes of questions I found out she meant natural like a filter, not like real life. Now I always ask clients to show me 3 pics of what they DON'T want, saves everyone headaches.

Yeah the "natural but Instagram" thing is a real trap. I gotta say though, asking for 3 pics of what they don't want is smart but it can backfire too. Sometimes people show you stuff they hate and it's all over the place, like one photo is too dark and another is too bright and you're left guessing still. I think the clearer move is asking for 3 pics of what they DO want plus 1 or 2 of what they don't. That way you get a solid middle ground. Less guessing games for everyone.

Man the "natural but Instagram" thing hits too close to home... had a client last week ask for something "soft and lived in" and pulled up a photo of perfectly chunky caramel highlights with zero regrowth. Real life doesn't look like that after two weeks you know? Your idea about asking what they don't want is smart though... I might start doing that too because I'm tired of the guessing game. Feels like people see salon photos and forget real hair moves and grows and changes in different lighting. Honestly it's just exhausting having to decode what "natural" actually means every single time.
