My mentor in Tulsa always said to use a 1.5 inch curling iron for short hair, not a 1 inch
I argued with her for months, thinking a smaller barrel gave tighter, better curls on my pixie-cut clients. After a client's hair came out looking crimped and frizzy, I tried the 1.5 inch like she said. The curls were way smoother and had more body, which lasted for two full days. Anyone have a different go-to iron size for really short styles?

Tighter curls from a smaller barrel is what most people assume" is exactly the trap I fell into too. @tarab54 it's less about half an inch and more about how the hair lays once it cools down from the heat. Did your mentor say anything about the heat setting too or just size?

Honestly who cares that much about half an inch. It's just hair, it'll grow back.

Tell that to someone who just paid a hundred bucks for a cut and color. That half inch can be the difference between a style that looks right and one that looks totally off. For a lot of people their hair is a big part of how they feel about themselves. It's not just hair, it's confidence. Saying it'll grow back kinda misses the point when you're stuck with a bad cut for months.
