Just walked out of a SalonCentric in Charlotte that sold me expired developer
I grabbed a bottle of 20 volume from the shelf last Tuesday and didn't notice the batch code was from 2021 until I got home and it wouldn't lift anybody's color. Has anyone else had issues with their local supply store letting old stock sit out?

Flip the bottle over and take a photo of the batch code next time. If they give you pushback at the register just tell them you're checking for recalls. Saves you the drive back.

Yo, that sucks! But here's something nobody's brought up yet - sometimes expired developer isn't just weak, it can actually mess with the integrity of your formula. I've seen old 20 volume turn into basically water with a little peroxide left, and you end up with patchy lifts and weird brass tones. At that point @barbara399's tip about checking codes at the register is solid advice, but also look at how they store it. Heat and light exposure in those big warehouse shelves can speed up the breakdown way faster than the batch code suggests. Your mileage may vary, but I always give bottles a gentle shake before buying - if it feels thinner than usual, that's a red flag.
