I finally made a rule about doing hair for friends
My neighbors used to ask me for quick trims all the time. I felt guilty turning them down but it was eating into my personal time. Now, I offer them a small discount if they book a real appointment. This has made them see my work as valuable, not just a favor. It has really helped keep our relationships good and my schedule sane.

Totally, that discount makes them RESPECT your craft as real work.

Ever had someone ask for just a "quick edit" on something, not understanding it's still real work? Like @river_hart18 said, I started naming a small fee even for friends. For example, I'd say helping with a resume or a flyer would be a flat twenty bucks. That tiny charge made them see it as a real task, not a favor. It stopped the "while you're at it" requests and they valued the result more.

Oh man, this is so real. I had the same thing happen when I first started doing photography on the side. Friends just expected free shoots, and it got so awkward. I started telling people I had a friends and family rate that was a bit off my normal price. It totally changed how they saw the time and gear I was using. Setting that small boundary made me feel way less stressed and actually made our friendships better, because there wasn't that hidden resentment anymore. Your discount idea is such a smart way to handle it.
