Had a client in Tulsa ask for a 'sunset' balayage and then bring in a picture of a literal fireball.
Spent two hours mixing custom colors, used a full tube of 8VR and half a tube of 7RR, trying to get that orange-to-red blend. She looked in the mirror and said, 'It's pretty, but where's the yellow part?' I had to explain that adding yellow to her dark brown base would make it look muddy, not like a sunset. Has anyone else had a client bring in a photo of something that's just not possible with hair color?

Man, that's rough. I had a lady bring in a picture of a peacock feather once. Like @loganhart said, you can't spin straw into gold. I ended up showing her a swatch book and pointing out the closest blues and greens I could actually lift her hair to. We settled on a dark teal peek-a-boo highlight that looked awesome, but it was a whole talk about realistic expectations. Sometimes you just gotta guide them to something cool that actually works on their hair.

Clients bringing in pictures of actual celestial bodies is a special kind of challenge. Did she want you to spin straw into gold while you were at it? The gap between a photo of the sun and what's possible on human hair is about a million miles wide. You can only work with the canvas you're given, and dark brown doesn't exactly reflect light like the atmosphere.

Yeah, the "canvas you're given" thing is so real. My buddy had a client bring in a picture of a nebula once and just expected it on their black hair. Like, idk, maybe it's just me but some people think we're wizards.
