Blew out my curling iron mid-service last Tuesday...

I was in the middle of a 45-minute blowout for a bridal trial at the salon in Portland, and my curling iron just sparked and died. The client's hair was half done with these perfect waves on one side and nothing on the other. I had to grab a loaner from the stylist next to me, but it heated up way slower and gave a different curl pattern. Has anyone else had a tool die on them mid-service and had to totally adjust?

Every time something like this happens, it reminds me how we base our whole flow on gear that could quit any second. A buddy of mine is a chef and his immersion blender died mid-soup service, had to finish with a whisk and a lot of elbow grease. The cake decorator down the street keeps two piping bags pre-loaded because her main one split during a wedding cake once. Your mileage may vary, but I've noticed the pros always have a backup plan for their backup plan, even if it's just knowing who to borrow from.

Forty five minutes for a blowout? For a bridal trial? That sounds more like a personal preference than a crisis. I get that gear fails, but swapping to a different curling iron for the last half of waves is not the end of the world. @theawest brought up the chef and the cake decorator, but honestly those are totally different levels of stakes. A different curl pattern on one side of a trial run is fixable. Unless the bride is literally walking down the aisle in twenty minutes, you have time to redo or blend it. Seems like a lot of drama over a minor hiccup.
