A client's throwaway comment made me change my balayage technique

Last month in Portland, someone told me my highlights looked 'too stripey' and I was furious for a day, then realized she was right. I switched from foils to a freehand painting method on my next 3 clients and the blend is way softer. Has anyone else had a blunt critique that actually improved their work?

Wait, did you change your product too or just the method? Cause freehand painting can look great but it also depends on the developer and how you saturate the ends. I'm curious if you found the color fades different or if the regrowth is less obvious now. Also, are you still using a brush for the base or did you switch that up too? Just wondering if it was a full system change or just the application part.
