5 hour corrective color turned into a 3 day nightmare. Did I mess up or was the old color just impossible?

Had a client come in last Tuesday with faded black box dye that had been on her hair for like 2 years. She wanted to go back to her natural light brown. I figured a couple rounds of color remover then a gloss would do it. 5 hours later I had orange patches and green spots in the same section. Tried a Demi perm to balance it out and it got worse. Ended up doing 3 separate treatments over 3 days and it still came out uneven. She was cool about it but I felt awful. Is it normal for old box dye to fight back that hard or did I miss a step? Should I have just stripped it all and started fresh with a darker base?

Always fights back" is right... @the_mason, mine fought back so hard it looked like I lost a paintball match.
