Our $12k estimating software told us a job needed 400 sheets of drywall, it needed 90
Two weeks ago we bid a 3,000 sq ft office buildout in Boise. Our estimating software pumped out a takeoff that said 400 sheets of 5/8 drywall. Something felt off but the number came from the software so I trusted it. We won the bid and started hanging. Turns out the software double counted every room because of how the walls were drawn in the CAD file. We only needed 90 sheets. I caught it after our third delivery when the foreman called and said the stacks were piling up in the parking lot. We ate about $4,800 in restocking fees and wasted a full day of labor moving sheets around. Now I cross check every takeoff by hand on the first two rooms before I trust the total. Has anyone found a better way to catch CAD layer issues before the software runs the numbers?
